Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about CPF contributions in Singapore
Who needs to contribute to CPF? −
CPF contributions are mandatory for all Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents (PRs) who are employed and earning more than $50 per month. Employers must contribute for all employees regardless of whether they are full-time, part-time, or casual workers. Self-employed persons are required to contribute to their MediSave account.
What is the Ordinary Wage (OW) ceiling? +
The OW ceiling is the maximum amount of ordinary wages (monthly salary) on which CPF contributions are computed. As of 2024, the OW ceiling is SGD 6,800 per month. Any wages above this amount do not attract CPF contributions on the ordinary wage component. There is also an Annual Wage ceiling for additional wages like bonuses.
What are the CPF rates for Permanent Residents? +
PRs have graduated CPF rates during their first two years. In the 1st year, the employee contributes 5% and employer 4% (for age 55 and below). In the 2nd year, rates increase to employee 15% and employer 17%. From the 3rd year onwards, PR rates are the same as Singapore Citizens. Employers can opt for full employer rates during the graduated period.
Can I make voluntary CPF contributions? +
Yes. You can make voluntary contributions to your own or your family members' CPF accounts. Voluntary contributions to your MediSave Account (up to the Basic Healthcare Sum) are tax-deductible. You can also top up your Special Account or Retirement Account under the Retirement Sum Topping-Up Scheme for additional tax relief of up to $8,000 for self and $8,000 for family members.
